FAQ

Can I refinish furniture that I make?

Yes! There are many options for refinishing furniture that you don't need to hire a professional. Here are some suggestions:

Use sandpaper to remove scratches and stains. Next, wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth.

Apply clear polyurethane varnish. Allow furniture to dry completely before you move it around.

Use acrylic paint to paint furniture.

Use stain instead of paint. The furniture will have a rich look thanks to the stain.

Use shellac wax. The wax will add shine to the wood and protect it.

Where can I purchase woodworking supplies

There are many places where you will find everything that you need. You could shop at your local hardware store or go online to Amazon.com.

For furniture and other materials that you can reuse, check out flea markets and garage sales.

Are you able to teach yourself woodworking

Doing is the best way to learn any subject. Woodworking is an art form that requires patience, practice, skill, and experience. Any craft requires patience to master.

You can learn the most effective way to master a skill is by actually doing it. Start small and learn from your mistakes.

How long does it take to finish a piece of furniture?

It all depends on what type of wood you use, how complex your design is, and how much finishing you use. Hardwoods require more care than softwoods. Hardwoods tend to be more expensive that softwoods. They last longer and are more resistant to moisture. Finishing furniture can take anywhere from one week up to three months.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will demonstrate how to join two pieces together of wood. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. This method is great if your wood's straight and smooth. Try dowel joinery instead if your wood doesn't look straight. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. You will need to measure and mark the exact location of your pocket hole joint. Then drill 3/4 inch deep holes into the ends of each piece of wood using a jig saw or handheld drilling machine.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
  3. Glue Together Apply glue on both sides of the wooden plank. Allow it to sit for approximately 5 minutes before you clamp the pieces together.
  4. Attach the Pieces together. After the glue has dried thoroughly, secure the pieces so that they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trimming the joinery after glue has completely dried.

Be sure to leave enough space between each piece so that they can be turned inside-out.
