Fred also carved a caricature Luciano Pavarotti in 2009, earning him the Second Runner-Up Award at a national woodcarving convention.

Eyes

Carving caricatures requires that the eyes be realistic. Although it is fine to have realistic looking eyes, the lack of enough detail can cause viewers to be dissatisfied. To make sure that your eyes are symmetrical, you can take a photograph of an existing carving and follow the steps outlined in the photo.

The next step in carving the eyes is to determine the shape of the eyes. Some carvers use the exact same eye shape, while others may use a different one. Others use different shapes to create more believable eyes. To make your eyes symmetrical, you can use stop cuts to carve the lower eyelid. The iris and pupil will also need to be carved. Once these details are completed, you're ready to move on to the next step in carving the caricature.

Safety

The wood carving caricatures are very unique. They tell stories without the use of words. Artists who create them take great pride in their accuracy. Caricatures are often described as depictions of people or things that are exaggerated to convey an impression, or satire. Dave Stetson, wood carving carver has established stringent rules for carvers safety and quality.

Before you begin carving a caricature of a person, make sure to clean the surface and get rid of any pencil marks. You can clean the surface with water or dish soap. To carve the neck and head, use a V-shaped 60 degree tool. A 60-degree V shape tool is useful for carving, as it cuts wood easily. Ramelson's 60-degree V-shaped Carving Tool is an excellent choice. How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will show how to join 2 pieces of wood together. We will be using the "pocket-hole joint", which involves drilling holes in wood and then gluing them together. If your wood has a straight grain, smooth surface, you can use this method. You may want to consider other methods, such as dowel joining. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Measure and mark the location where you would like to place the pocket hole joint. Next, drill 3/4 inch holes in each end of each piece using a handheld drilling machine or jigsaw.
  2. Sand Smooth. You can sand the edges of the wood to ensure that it doesn't split.
  3. Glue together. Apply glue to both sides of the wood. Allow it to sit for approximately 5 minutes before you clamp the pieces together.
  4. Attach the Pieces together. After the glue has dried you can attach the pieces to form a flush joint.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim any excess wood surrounding the joint once the glue has dried completely.

To be able to turn the pieces inside-out, leave enough room between them.
